The first practical use of Direct Digital Simulation (DDS) for gears goes back to 1986. The first DDS software for spiral bevel gears has been written at Mil Helicopter Co in Moscow. The software would calculate the 3-dimensional geometry of spiral bevel gear tooth based on the Gleason machine summary. Then the software would calculate the tooth contact of the spiral bevel gears at the nominal position and at misaligned positions such as mounting distance deviations or radial run-out.
Direct Digital Simulation for gears is the only existing book that explains ideas of the novel theory of gears. The only other source for learning are zakgear.com and the othe zak- web sites.
Spiral Bevel Co is the only known gear manufacturing company that applied DDS for practical production of large spiral bevel gears. It has been practically proved that DDS method is more practical for gear production compare to the methods that have been traditionally used before. Spiral Bevel Co  manufactures large spiral bevel gears for  marine, industrial, mining, and wind power applications.

This book presents a new approach for solving complex gear design and manufacturing problems. The volume 1 covers variety of applications of the new method with numerous graphical examples and software samples. The book is targeted on gear engineers, students and advanced gear professionals. The high-resolution 3-dimensional graphical simulations will help the beginners to learn this complicated area of mechanics. The software samples will be useful for every day work of engineers and for advanced gear software developers.
